Henning, Mrs. Elli

Elli Henning, nee Lutze. She was born 24 November 1905 in Hasselfelde, Saxony-Anhalt (Sachsen-Anhalt), Germany.’ Her father was Frits (Fritz? – very likely short for Friedrich) Lutze. She sailed from Hamburg, Germany, 26 April 1929 as a steerage (i. e. third class) passenger on the steamer Albert Ballin and came to New York 6 May 1929. She was bound for 604 East 45th Street in Seattle, Washington, where her uncle Carl Lutze lived. She was 5’3”, had a fair complexion, blond hair and gray eyes. She declared her intention of becoming a US citizen 9 December 1931 at seattle, Washington. She was employed as a house maid at the time. She married Hans Henning 15 April 1933 in King County, Washington. They belonged to the Trinity Lutheran Church of Lynnwood, Washington.

The couple had resided at Useless Bay Colony on Whidbey Island since 1974. They were longtime Seattleites before Mr. Henning retired in 1973. He was in the custom-furniture and interior-decorating business here for 45 years, with an office on Capitol Hill. Mr. Henning and the former Elly Lutze, both natives of Germany, emigrated to the United States in the late 1920s, and met and married in Seattle in 1933. Mr. Henning was a past president of the Capitol Hill Lions Club, a board member of the German retirement home and a board member of the Beach Club of Useless Bay Golf and Country Club. He was also active in the Steuben Society. Mrs. Henning was also active in the Jacks and Jills of the Jackson Golf Course while a Seattle resident, and the Women’s Golf Club of the Useless Bay Golf and Country Club. Survivors include two daughters, Barbara Bray, Edmonds, and Susan Kirschner, Vashon Island. (Seattle Times, 30 March, 1977, G 10). In 1977, they lived in Langley, Washington.Mr. and Mrs. Henning were both killed in the Tenerife jumbo jet crash 27 March 1977.
